OFF Festival Katowice 2021: Mac DeMarco, Alyona Alyona and more artists to whet your appetite!

Mac DeMarco, Alyona Alyona, DIIV, Quinn Christopherson, and DJ Python join the roster, which means next year’s OFF is going to be brimming with sunshine, with some personal confessions and a pinch of gloom. There’s doubt about these ingredients: 100% good music.

Mac DeMarco
DeMarco has described his music as jizz jazz; whatever that means, one thing’s for sure: his sound is bursting with effortless ease, sunlight, and good humor. The Canadian artist’s six-album discography is filled with excellent, unpretentious songs. One Rolling Stone reviewer described listening to Mac’s latest release, Here Comes the Cowboy, as “spending 45 minutes petting a cat,” and you’d be hard-pressed to come up with a better comparison.
As previously planned for this year’s edition, Mac DeMarco will be doing more than just putting on an unforgettable show. He’s also agreed to take over as guest curator of the Experimental Stage for one night. Watch this spot for the lineup!

Alyona Alyona
Not too long ago, Alyona Savranenko was working as a kindergarten teacher in rural Ukraine, haunted by self doubt and dark thoughts. Today, she’s an international hip-hop star and role model for many girls (and boys). “My tracks are about people who don’t believe in themselves and why they have to change that,” the rapper says. It all started with the homemade music video to her song “Ribki,” which she posted on YouTube in the fall of 2018 and became in instant viral sensation. Half a year later, Alyona had a whole album under her belt: Pushka, hailed by many as one of the best debut LPs of 2019. The artist caused quite a stir on the domestic rap scene this year when she appeared as a guest on a track by Ten Typ Mes’ new project Biały Tunel.

We’re always in the market for some good old-fashioned guitar rock. Our latest supply comes courtesy of DIIV, a New York quartet that’s creatively carrying on the best traditions of shoegaze. Their return to the concert circuit comes after a hiatus of several years, during which DIIV frontman Zachary Cole Smith took time off to attend to his health and personal life. Things are better now, and the 2019 Deceiver, the third in the band’s catalog, is their heaviest and darkest effort to date.

Quinn Christopherson
This Alaskan singer-songwriter won NPR’s 2019 Tiny Desk Contest with the touching song “Erase Me,” in which he shares his difficult experience coming out as transgender. “I’m tired of people trying to erase me,” he sings in the chorus, “Cause I got a voice now, I got power.” This concert, this voice, this manifestation of internal power is one you’ll never erase. And if there’s any place in the world where his voice will ring out with great power, it’s here in Poland, in these times.

DJ Python
The Ecuadorian-born New Yorker Brian Piñeyro calls his original music deep reggaeton; it sounds like the dying rays of the summer sun refracting off the waters of ambient and deep house. It’s good, nostalgic, and soothing. Check out his latest album, Mas Amable, released in April 2020 on Anthony Naples’ label Incienso. Maybe not while driving, but while relaxing on vacation in a beautiful natural landscape. It’s way too easy to get lost in this daydream.

The 2021 OFF Festival Katowice will also feature the previously announced artist Caribou.
