OFF Festival Katowice 2018: Thanks, and see you next year!
Sounds from all over the world, wise words, provocative questions, enthralling discussions: three intense days, and yet another great OFF Festival. Thank you for showing up in such great numbers and helping us make this happen. See you next year.
The weather was fine, not counting the smattering of rain before the Turbonegro show, not enough to discourage fans who had converged from every corner of Europe. The mood was even better than the weather — you don’t see this many smiling faces every day. And there were plenty of reasons to smile at the OFF Festival.
From the magical performance given by Charlotte Gainsbourg, to the deep dive into Grizzly Bear’s cave of treasure, from Kult’s rendition of Spokojnie, with the whole audience singing along, to new and intriguing names on the Polish music scene: the furious Sierść, the charming Panieneczki, the dancing MIN t. Big Freedia taught us how to twerk, Marlon Williams captured our hearts with his brilliant songs and personal charm. Furia once again set the world on fire, while Skalpel hypnotized us with music arranged for an unusually large ensemble. Unsane knocked out anyone who got too close, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever delivered relief with a pinch of melancholy, and Moses Sumney just stunned everyone within earshot of his voice. The Warsaw Village Band took us on a whirlwind tour of Masovian back roads, paired with a journey through the fascinating history of the Balkans with The Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices. John Hopkins, Bo Ningen, Oxbow and Harry Merry launched us into space, where Arial Pink and his lively entourage picked us up. And so on, and so forth… We’re not going to list all the artists that performed at this year’s OFF Festival, but they all contributed beautifully to this three-day carnival of the world’s best music.
We want to thank the fans for turning out in such great numbers — there were over 15,000 of us at Three Pond Valley every day — and for taking part in all the activities the festival had to offer. Big thanks to the artists for all their blood, sweat and tears, and for leaving us moved, stunned and entertained. Thank you to all the OFF Festival’s partners, staff and volunteers. We hope this charge of festival energy keeps you all going till August 2019. See you then!
